Our Scottie, Olive, takes us for a walk just about every afternoon. Often, she insists we drive her to Oceanside Harbor where she chases after pigeons and gulls, frolics on the grassy strip, and picks up “messages” at the base of each palm tree. It’s amazing how many new friends she makes during her outings!
I was holding her leash, ogling the dozens of crafts bobbing gently in their slips, when I heard the familiar cooing of a dove coming from the tip of a sailboat’s mast. The soft, murmuring sound echoed that of the mourning doves that strut on the rooftop of Dar Zitoun, and in one instant, I was transported from one continent to another. More than once at our riad, I have uncovered a delicate, feather-lined nest among the potted ivy geraniums. Sometimes, a tiny eggshell and a few feathers are all that remain after a raid by one of Azemmour’s ubiquitous feral cats.
Luckily, Oceanside’s harbor doesn’t allow predators, not even offleash scotties. And the doves continue to coo!
